5 Ways to Build Bigger Basket Sizes in your Cannabis Dispensary

Sell more weed and build bigger basket sizes 🛍️

Influencing consumer purchasing decisions and increasing basket size can be a daunting task.

As a retailer, your goal is to sell and move products. This means you have to continuously follow and understand consumer buying habits and adapt your sales strategy to match purchasing patterns.

Though it may seem challenging to keep up with, the effort you put in can go a long way. Here at BudSense, we wanted to share with you what we’ve learned from being in the cannabis retail space to help you increase basket sizes, category growth, and profit. Here are some ways to do so.

  1. Offer Promotions

Sales promotions are an excellent way to increase basket size. When customers enter your store you can entice them to buy more with quality deals. An important thing to remember when developing your promotional strategy is to ensure that these products on sale don’t cannibalize the revenue from your full-priced items. To avoid this cannibalization, you can analyze your data and run A/B testing with similar products to see how promotions affect purchasing decisions.

2. Innovate your store layout

The way your dispensary is designed and laid out influences the way customers think and move. As outlined in our 4 Top Cannabis Retail Tips blog we highlighted how a ‘Quick Food Service’, ‘Loop’ or combination of both layouts impacts the success of a cannabis store.

3. Optimize Category Management

Does your dispensary carry what your customers want to buy? Paying close attention to what your customer is buying and ensuring you are stocked up on these products will help reduce the amount of under-performing products in your store. These products should be a mix of top-sellers and niche items. As you learn which categories and products are the best performers, you’ll want to ensure these products are prominently featured at the top right side of your menus.

4. Product Bundling

Bundling products together raises your sales revenue by increasing the average number of products purchased. Buying multiple items at a time, even at a discount means that the customer is spending more than they would when compared to buying a single product.

Bundling products, creating combos has a great effect on the bottom line of your business. When customers buy more cannabis products, not only do they pay a lump sum amount but they are also collecting a handful of different products— making this a great technique to increase your customer’s basket size.

5. “Top Sellers” and “Staff Picks”

Many of your customers come into your dispensary and are looking for recommendations. They want to be told what to buy. They need guidance. This is where “Top Sellers” and “Staff Pickslabels come in. Communicating to your customers what others like is a great way to direct your customers’ attention to the really great stuff that might otherwise be overlooked.

If these 5 tips don't work, you could also just purchase bigger baskets for your customers to fill. The bigger the bag you have to hold products, the bigger the basket size. Problem solved. 😂

With all jokes aside, we hope you found this blog helpful in providing ways to help increase your basket sizes and help you move product inventory in your dispensary. For more ways to help build basket sizes, contact us any time as we’d be happy to brainstorm ideas with you.
