How The Weed Store Merchandises in their Dispensary

Lucas Gillespie

Last week we had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Lucas Gillespie, the General Manager of The Weed Store in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Lucas found his way over to the cannabis industry by starting in the bar industry. He used to work for Victoria’s Tavern but when cannabis became legalized in Canada he switched over to working for Farmer Jane Cannabis Co. a cannabis retail company. From there, he moved to helping open The Weed Store and has been managing it ever since. Luc says the transition from the bar industry to the cannabis industry felt very natural.

During our time visiting The Weed Store, we learned a lot from Lucas about what it’s like managing operations in his shop and his point of view on the industry. Here is what we learned.

The Future of the Cannabis Industry

Cannabis Hopes and Dreams

We asked Lucas, What are you most excited for in the cannabis industry?”. Luc’s response was that he’s really excited to one day smoke a joint or a bowl at a restaurant or cafe with his friends. Here at BudSense, we also dream of the day cannabis cafes and cannabis restaurants will be allowed.

Though this form of business is acceptable in places like Amsterdam and the United States, there is no telling as to when this will be allowed in Canada. Though we think it is only a matter of time, currently, there's a sharp divide between health officials and business groups on whether or not the government should allow cannabis lounges and cafes, and broaden the number of places where pot can be sold. Either way, we won’t stop dreaming about it.

Cannabis Education

Lucas has noticed a recent shift in the progression of cannabis education. He thinks we’re moving away from only educating the customers about THC towards now introducing discussions around terpenes and different cannabinoids. Though he thinks talking about THC is still very important, Lucas also thinks we should also be focusing on the effects of cannabis and the high rather than just the THC percentage.

We’ve noticed this seems to be a common answer when asking about the direction of cannabis education and are super excited to see how the shift impacts consumers.

We were happy to see Lucas and learn about what it takes to operate The Weed Store and where he thinks the cannabis industry is headed. We can’t wait to see this cannabis store flourish and what they are doing to celebrate this 420.
