Farmer Jane Cannabis Co. uses Digital Boards, Paper, and Web Menus
Our team creates case studies of our clients to showcase the many different ways BudSense can be used to enhance your brand and operation. BudSense isn’t a one size fits all product. Our platform is built to create a one of a kind digital, paper, and web menu experiences that contribute to your unique brand vision.
This edition of our case study blog series highlights what Farmer Jane has done with BudSense’s tools including: menu duplication, seasonal themes, and location based THC. We can’t wait to see what you and your team do!
Farmer Jane Cannabis Co.
Farmer Jane Cannabis Co. is a multi-store operator based out of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. They currently have 7 stores and are growing fast. Their brand is geared towards a down-home prairie experience with talented budtenders selling value and premium products.
Farmer Jane takes a unique approach to digital menus by incorporating their rustic branding into their menu frames. Their digital menu wall contains the majority of their cannabis product offering, supported by two marketing menus on either wall, and stand-up paper menus throughout the space.
Four of the digital displays are used in portrait mode behind the main point of sale counter to display flower, bulk flower, concentrates, and edibles. They use two additional portrait digital displays for feature local producers and marketing assets.
Paper menu stand ups are used throughout the store to display their pre-roll offering.
Primary Digital Cananbis Menus Boards
Using Digital Menu boards as the primary product display is the most common way we see our clients lay out their menus. It’s an effective way to display either all or most of your products.
Farmer Jane Cannabis Co. utilizes its bank of four digital displays behind the counter. It’s important to consider font size and theme selection when your customers are required to read menus behind the counter.
Edibles - Digital Display
Flower (Sativa, Hybrid) - Digital Display
Flower (Indica, CBD) - Digital Display
Bulk Flower, Concentrates - Digital Display
Cannabis Paper Menus
We love to see when our clients use multiple menu types when merchandising their cannabis stores. Paper and Digital both have pros and cons and a combination can often be the most effective approach to creating a well-balanced store.
Pre-Rolls - Paper Menu Stand-Up
Farmer Jane uses paper menu stand ups throughout the space to display their pre-roll menus.
We like this approach. Oftentimes pre-roll customers are in-and-out and convenience focused who benefit from a familiar paper menu ready to go for them right at check-out. To accommodate busy times, Farmer Jane also puts their pre-roll menu on the display counters throughout the store to make sure when there is a line up at the counter their pre-roll customers can still have access to the pre-roll menu.
Farmer Jane also has a paper menu only store along with their typical digital / paper combination stores. This “paper only” store uses a 3 page menu that contains the bulk of their products along with a pre-roll stand up. We mention this because it’s a good reminder that with BudSense not all of your stores need to have the same configuration of menus to be successful.
What about Cannabis Vapes and Cannabis Oils?
Farmer Jane has an interesting approach to their vape menus. They choose to either utilize the side wall marketing displays or a cannabis paper menu stand-up to display their vape offering depending on the space. Again, showing the flexibility of the BudSense platform for different store layouts within the same operation.
Vapes - Paper Menu Stand-Up OR Digital Displays
Edible oils are displayed in a conventional retail display and not on paper or a digital menu in the Farmer Jane stores. We’ve seen this with a few of our clients. The reason being seems to be that cannabis oils and capsules often require more consulting with the client and can be better off displayed in a lower traffic area to create a more intimate experience.
We have also heard that since oils are a lower revenue category, operators prefer to use their premium digital menu space for higher volume products like flower, vapes, or pre-rolls.

Location-Based THC Percentages on your menus
One of the critical features that Farmer Jane uses to differentiate from their multi-location competition is BudSense’s ability to display location-based accurate THC and CBD percentages.
Farmer Jane uses global THC and CBD %’s on products like Drinks, Edibles, and Oils that typically don’t change values from batch to batch. This is done to streamline the data entry from store to store.
Example Deep Space is set to a global THC percentage of 10mg, it will be updated for all stores with one entry.
They then use location based THC and CBD % 's on products like Flower and Pre-Rolls that change values from batch to batch. This data entry is typically done when they receive new products.
Example Redecan’s Cold Creek Kush’s new batch comes in at 20.7%, enter that THC in particular location and it won’t affect your other stores or batches.
Menu Duplication and Launching New Cannabis Stores
BudSense has a learning curve, we do not shy away from that. But once clients get their menus up and running and tuned to how they want them we have seen significant time saving and efficiencies when it comes to launching new locations.
Farmer Jane’s first store had a pretty typical BudSense onboarding timeline, a couple days of working through the menu’s look and feel, updating display names, and product information. Now that the setup work is complete, Farmer Jane launches their new store menus in a couple of hours with no support or back and forth with our team.
We are here to help but we also want to get out of the way and let you do your thing.
Seasonal Themes Digital Menu Boards and Paper Menus
We love seeing what Farmer Jane’s marketing team comes up with for their seasonal merchandising. They utilize the background image/video feature on their menus to shake up the look and feel of their space on holidays and events. These changes can all easily be made for all locations on the BudSense dashboard.
Here are a couple of examples of what they have done in the past:
If your logo doesn’t fit into the season theme you’re trying to pull off. Just go to menu ‘Additional Features’ and turn off the logo like Farmer Jane did for their Merch Madness promotion.
Web Cannabis Menus
Farmer Jane is one of a handful of our clients that use digital, paper, and web menus. All three are included in your subscription but it’s not unusual to only use 1 or 2 of the menu types. Oftentimes a store will only use digital, paper, or a combination of both and then a third party or something else for their online menu. We would be happy to discuss what combination of menus might work for you.
Custom Theme Development
BudSense provides you with a theme builder that allows for a menu design that fits the the specific brand and merchandising strategy of your store. That said, if the building blocks we provide you with are not enough to bring your vision to life, we also have the option of creating a custom theme.
Farmer Jane decided to go the custom theme route to ensure that their BudSense theme captured their exact brand vision.
